Celiac DiseaseCeliac disease is a disorder where gluten (the protein component of wheat, rye, triticale, and barley) damages the absorbing surface of the small intestines. Although classic symptoms include diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, bloating, stomach pain and irritability, many other symptoms can be caused by celiac disease. Some doctors recommend that anyone who has been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome be screened for this. Recently a home blood test kit (Biocard) has been approved by Health Canada for screening purposes. If positive it needs to be followed up by your doctor. If you have some of the symptoms mentioned, consult with your health care provider. |
